The Hidden Garden in Maitland, Ontario
This styled shoot is inspired by the unique natural beauty of the venue. Set at the stunning Maitland Tower, that the current owner happened upon one day and lovingly restored, the venue is nestled along the serene shores of the St. Lawrence River in Maitland, Ontario.
Drawing from the natural elements around the venue, the overall colour palette is a blend of sunset, blush, burgundy and earthy tones of grey, blue, and green, reflecting the interplay of stone and water found in the setting. The river and the timeless stone walls were guiding influences for our styled shoot design. Wildlife is an essential part of the venue’s story, reflected in its bird-safe windows. So subtle bird-inspired elements were also incorporated throughout the design as a thoughtful nod to the venue’s commitment to protecting the wildlife that share its natural surroundings.
The ceremony was set at the front of the Maitland Tower, an 80-foot former windmill tower constructed in 1828. The floral statement pieces embraced the secret garden aesthetic and vibe, evoking the magic of a hidden garden rediscovered after years of quiet.
The reception in the Chart House featured a table adorned with lush, garden-inspired floral arrangements with the stunning cascading installation at the front being a true showstopper. The river was subtly reflected in the blue velvet table linen, and our mismatched napkins with the abstract colourful design added a playful yet refined touch. The stone and brown tones of the dinnerware added depth and reflected the venue’s grounded elegance. The tablescape also included distressed silver flatware and crystal textures that added a touch of refinement and created a balance with the organic elements of the tablescape.
The edible flower favours at each place setting introduce a delightful, whimsical and unexpected detail. Each handcrafted delicate petal is made from dehydrated fruit. A visually stunning and equally delicious favour. The cake also featured a breathtaking and artful design that also included dehydrated fruit flowers. The cake was designed in the shape of a birdbath, featuring a textured, stone-like base covered with overgrown wildflowers and vines (mimicking a hidden garden birdbath, that was reclaimed by nature). The cake was then placed in a basket to be shared on the boat picnic.
After the reception the couple went for a serene boat picnic along the water and shared the delicious cake. A beautifully styled lounge was set up in the boat with plush pillows, and a rug to create a cozy elegant retreat surrounded by a garden of florals. It was the perfect backdrop for classic picnic portraits, creating a sense of peaceful escape.
The stationery for this shoot included an elegant and eco-friendly invitation suite made from seeded paper. The invitation featured a stunning illustration of the tower. It was accompanied by the details insert that showcased the illustration in colour. Personalized menus and place cards that perfectly match the invitation suite, create a cohesive and elegant table setting.
The bride wore a fitted, V-neck gown with an open back and rich floral embroidery across the bodice and skirt. We paired it with a sheer cathedral-length veil for an effortless elegant look. Her hair was styled in a textured bun, paired with soft, natural makeup to complete the romantic look. The groom wore a burgundy suit accented with whimsical button details, paired with a carefully selected tie and brown shoes. The rings featured textured wedding bands in silver and rose gold. Their understated classic and contemporary design echoed the organic elegance of the overall design concept.
Both digital and film photography and videography were used throughout the shoot with the film lending a nostalgic, memory-like quality.
This styled shoot was one of the first events held at the venue following its renovation and restoration, making the chosen concept feel especially fitting and meaningful.
